In 1886, France gifted the United States the Statue of Liberty as a centennial gift. Since then, it has stood in New York Harbor as a symbol of freedom,  freedom that was fought for, sacrificed for, and preserved over time.

As we move toward America's 250th birthday, we are surrounded by reminders of that reality. The freedoms we enjoy today were not accidental. They came at a cost, through sacrifice, pain, struggle, and the willingness of others to fight for what they believed was worth protecting.

That idea of freedom being "fought for" helps us understand something deeper in Scripture. Because the greatest freedom we will ever receive was also purchased, but not by human effort, government, or warfare.

It was purchased by Jesus.

Paul writes in Galatians: "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage." - Galatians 5:1

Christ's freedom is not something we earn or defend; it is something He secured for us. The cross was where the price was fully paid, not in part, not halfway. It is finished, because it was fully purchased.

That's why Jesus says: So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. - John 8:36 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. - John 8:32

But just like national freedom has to be remembered and lived in by those who receive it, spiritual freedom also has to be walked out daily.

James helps us understand that posture: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. - James 4:7

We submit to God's truth. We resist what tries to pull us back. Not striving to become free, but standing in what Christ has already done.

That means freedom in Christ is not something we try to achieve. It is something we receive, and then we learn to stand in it.

And when that truth settles in, our response is not silent. It is spoken. Because there is power when God's people declare what He has already done.

So speak it out loud, with faith. Don't just think it, declare it, because your words agree with His truth:

I am not bound. I am not stuck. I am not who I used to be.
I am free because Jesus paid for my freedom.
I am free from sin. I am free from fear. I am free from worry. I am free from doubt. I am free from everything that tries to pull me back.

What Christ has broken, I will not carry. What Christ has finished, I will not return to.

So I stand in His liberty. I resist what is not from Him. And I walk in the freedom He fought for and finished. In Jesus' name, I am free.

Let's carry that declaration into prayer and ask God to root it deep.

Prayer: Father, thank You that my freedom was not just spoken over me, but purchased for me through Jesus. Help me not only to believe it, but to live in it daily. Train my heart to stand firm in truth and not drift back into what You have already broken. Let my life reflect the freedom Christ has secured. In Jesus' name, amen.
