Football season is winding down, and once again, another Super Bowl will come and go without the Buffalo Bills. It’s disappointing—we had the talent, the drive, and the hope that this would be our year. But here we are, waiting for next season. As fans, we analyze what went wrong and what could be better. But imagine if the players weren’t fully committed. What if Josh Allen and the offense stayed on the bench all season or never even showed up? What chance would the Bills have of winning a game, much less the championship?
The same is true for the church. It’s easy to show up, enjoy the message, and admire those who serve BUT God calls us to more than just watch—He calls us to participate. Church isn’t a stadium filled with fans; it’s a team working together to fulfill God’s mission. VCC isn’t meant to be a place where people just stay on the sidelines—it’s a place where people step up, serve, and make an impact.
2 Timothy 4:11-12 reminds us of the power of teamwork in ministry: "Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry." Paul knew the value of working alongside others, teaching and encouraging them to step into their calling.
In 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Paul describes the qualities of church leaders—not based on talent or skill, but on faithfulness and character. God isn’t looking for the most gifted—He’s looking for those willing to serve.
1 Corinthians 12:12 tells us, "For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ." No matter how full the team may seem, there is always a place for you. The church needs every person actively involved.
Life has a way of keeping us on the bench—busy schedules, bad weather, kids' activities, and endless commitments can pull us away. We don’t always mean to step back, but before we know it, we’re watching instead of playing. Just like a team can’t win without its players, the church thrives when everyone does their part. God isn’t looking for spectators—He’s inviting you to step in, be involved, and be part of what He’s doing!
So what are you missing by staying on the sidelines? Could God be calling you into deeper relationships that will strengthen your faith? Are there serving opportunities that will help you grow and make a difference? Jesus established His church to build His kingdom and grow us spiritually. Staying on the bench means missing out on both.
How will you get back in the game this year? Maybe it’s committing to Sunday services, joining a midweek class, or reconnecting with your church family. Perhaps it’s time to serve again.
Knowing our team isn’t in the big game is tough, but let’s not let that be the story of our spiritual lives. If the church were full of people waiting for someone else to make the plays, we’d never reach the goal. It’s time to step up, take your place, and be part of the victory God has planned!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for giving my life purpose. Thank You for calling me to be part of Your church. Give me the courage to step up, serve, and actively participate in what You are doing. Help me to see where I am needed and to follow Your leading faithfully. I commit to being a doer of Your Word and using my gifts to serve others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
