Jesus, our Prince of Peace
Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Peace. It's a short word—just five letters—yet so powerful that it can change everything. Isaiah prophesied that the coming Messiah would be the Prince of Peace. His role as Prince of Peace is directly tied to His role as Savior, accomplishing the task for which His Father sent Him into our world. Real peace can only be found in Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 - Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
The Bible speaks of a peace that surpasses all understanding. But what does that peace look like? Imagine being in the midst of stressful situations, surrounded by circumstances that, from the view of the world, should make you feel anxious and overwhelmed. Yet, instead of succumbing to those feelings, you experience a calm and unexplainable peace.
This is the kind of peace God desires for you, and this is the peace Jesus came to bring. While He never promised a life free from challenges, He did assure us of His help and presence through it all.
The concept of peace in the Bible is rich and multifaceted. In Hebrew, Shalom refers to a sense of wholeness, completeness, and tranquility, while the Greek word Eirene highlights unity and reconciliation. Both terms point to a more profound spiritual truth: the peace from being restored to a right relationship with God.
In our natural state, sin separates us from God, making us His enemies (Romans 5:10). Yet, through Christ’s sacrifice, we are reconciled to God, gaining peace with Him (Romans 5:1). This peace is not just an absence of conflict but a deep, abiding harmony that is unshakable (John 10:27–28). Jesus, as the “Prince of Peace,” offers this eternal reconciliation.
Christ’s work opened the door for the Holy Spirit to dwell in believers, empowering us to live in ways that reflect God. The Spirit produces love, joy, and peace in us as enduring qualities that influence our relationships with God and others (Galatians 5:22-23). This peace extends to our daily lives, enabling us to pursue unity with others, as Paul encourages in Ephesians 4:1-3.
Inner peace, however, can feel hard to maintain in daily life. While we do nothing to earn our peace with God (Ephesians 2:8–9), staying peaceful amidst challenges can be tricky.
Too many people wait around, hoping that God will shower down peace in their lives. Peace doesn’t come that way. You have to choose peace and believe God has and will give it to you!
Colossians 3:15-17 - And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
You have to let the peace of God in your heart. It doesn’t just come to you. You have to actively ask for it and then welcome it! Let that peace rule your heart.
His Word makes His Peace known to us. We must have large deposits of His Word in our lives, hearts, and minds. Allow the truth to wash away the fears and doubts that surround you. When an opportunity for worry or fear comes, let the Word of God inside you remind you what God has said about your situation, and choose to listen to that over the voice of fear. Let peace dominate your thoughts and life instead of fear. When you start to feel worried, refuse to fear, put your mind back on His promises.
Let your heart be full of thanksgiving. It will help you stay in peace. When you start to think about everything you have to be thankful for, there will be no time to think about what you can’t control. Refuse to worry, refuse to fear, allow the peace of God in your life, and let it overwhelm your natural understanding. It’s God’s plan that you walk in His peace.
